Fishermen Protest In Cam Ranh

Incident:

Hundreds of fishermen of Cam Ranh city threw the dead fish to Quốc Lộ 1 National Highway connecting north-south of Vietnam, pressured the government to talk to them immediately.

Hundreds of automobiles encountered traffic jam for several hours.

The fishermen gathered at the front door of Cam Phúc Bắc precinct government office.

According to Ms HOÀNG Thị Hồng, a witness, the fishermen operate the fish farms, but the sand dredging activities created pollution that killed their products, caused damages to over 100 families.

Story:

Police was executing forced-possession these farmers' land to build reinforced banks for Thạnh Hóa city.

This is the 2nd time the district government executing forced-possession in the same area. The first time in 1999, they took farmers' land for building commercial properties, affecting hundreds families.

Police arrested NGUYỄN Mai Trung Tuấn, 15, son of Mr Can and Mrs Kim Hương and released him in the morning of April 15, but kept 10 others in jail.

Farmers used gasoline bombs and acid to fight back, causing injuries to 20 policemen in which lieutenant colonel NGUYỄN Văn Thuỷ, the police chief, got acid burn in his back and was treated in Chợ Rẫy hospital. The police detained 10 farmers who were beaten badly, Mrs Kim Hương's parents had to get into the hospital.

According to Mrs Kim Hương's family, the land market price is $23 millions Vietnam đồng per square meter, but government only pays $300 thousands/m2.

Pollution In Bình Thuận Power Plant

Incident:

People occuppied Quốc Lộ 1A Highway to protest the power plant emitted black dust from burning coal into the atmosphere created bad pollution in the environment.

The protest created a bad traffic congestion of 50 kilometers long in the evening of Apr 15.

Police used tear gas to disperse. Protesters used gasoline bombs, rocks to fight back. The Vĩnh Hảo hotel was lightly damaged, 1 car parked at the hotel got minor damage, some people were injured. Around 11:00PM April 15, mechanical police force withdrew from the scene, the protesters removed the obstacles from the Quốc Lộ 1A Highway to free the traffic.
